Flag Hanging Dos and Don’ts

On 4th July, American flags will be displayed across the nation in celebration of the Independence Day holiday. In 1942, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed into law the Flag Code, which states the proper guidelines for displaying the American flag. When hanging an American flag, it’s important to follow proper flag etiquette and display it with respect. Here are some do’s and don’ts for hanging the American flag.

Do’s

1. Do fly the flag from sunrise to sunset. If you want to display it at night, make sure it is properly illuminated.
2. Do fly the flag in a prominent and respectful position. It should be the highest flag when displayed with other flags and should have a place of honor.
3. Do fly the flag with the union (blue field with stars) at the top left (viewer’s perspective).
4. Do ensure the flag is in good condition. Replace it if it becomes faded, torn, or tattered.
5. Do fold and store the flag properly when not in use. The traditional way to fold the flag is in the triangular “flag folding” method.
6. Do respect the flag by avoiding any acts that might be considered disrespectful, such as allowing it to touch the ground or floor.

Don’ts

1. Don’t fly a flag that is damaged, worn out, or in poor condition.
2. Don’t use the flag for any advertising or commercial purposes.
3. Don’t let the flag touch the ground or any other objects beneath it.
4. Don’t fly the flag upside down, except as a distress signal.
5. Don’t fly the flag in inclement weather, unless it is an all-weather flag specifically designed for such conditions.
6. Don’t display a flag that is larger than any other national flag being displayed at the same location.
