Gigziee_Concrete Driveway Crack

The concrete driveway is durable. However, concrete driveways can deteriorate and develop cracks over the years. Cracks in concrete driveways can be caused by tree roots and soil movement, freezing and thawing cycles in the winter, and expansion during the summer. That’s when it’s time to take action — fixing your concrete driveway by yourself. Here’s a guide on how to repair driveway cracks in concrete.

Before You Begin

For beginners, waiting until the weather is dry and your concrete’s temperature sits around 50 degrees Fahrenheit is better. Then, you’ll want all the necessary safety tools, such as:

  • Rubber gloves
  • Long pants and long sleeves
  • Safety glasses
  • A first-aid kit

Tools and Materials

Tools:

  • Chisel or screwdriver
  • Putty knife or trowel
  • Wire brush

Materials:

  • Masonry or concrete crack filler
  • Concrete sealant or sealer (optional)

Step-by-step instructions

1. Prepare the crack

  • Clean the crack by removing any loose debris, dirt, or vegetation using a chisel, screwdriver, or wire brush.
  • Use a wire brush to thoroughly clean the crack and its surrounding area. This will help the filler adhere better.

2. Fill the crack

  • Choose a masonry or concrete crack filler that is suitable for your driveway. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific product you’re using.
  • Use a putty knife or trowel to apply the crack filler into the crack. Fill it slightly above the surface to allow for settling.
  • Smooth the surface of the filler with the putty knife or trowel, ensuring it is level with the surrounding concrete.

3. Allow for drying and settling

  • Let the crack filler dry and cure according to the manufacturer’s instructions. This typically takes several hours or overnight.
  • During the drying process, the filler may settle slightly. Add more filler if needed to maintain a level surface.

4. Apply a concrete sealant (optional)

  • If desired, apply a concrete sealant or sealer to the driveway surface to protect it and enhance its appearance.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the sealant product you choose.
  • Apply the sealant evenly over the entire driveway using a roller or sprayer. Allow it to dry completely before using the driveway.

It’s important to note that while filling cracks can help prevent further damage, it may not eliminate them. Large or deep cracks may require more extensive repair work, and it’s recommended to consult a professional if you’re unsure or if the cracks are severe.

Regular maintenance, such as periodically sealing your concrete driveway, can help prevent new cracks from forming and extend its lifespan. Additionally, it’s important to address any underlying issues causing the cracks, such as drainage problems or soil settlement, to prevent future damage.
